In my last two articles I have addressed the immune system and how it works and what happens when it’s not working efficiently. If your challenged with an autoimmune disease, below is a list of foods that can be eaten and foods that need to be avoided. Take note that this is a life changing process and not something that’s done temporarily.
Foods To Eat:
Vegetables: Artichoke, arugula, asparagus, beet, bok choy, broccoli, brussels sprouts, butternut squash, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chard, collard greens, cucumber, daikon, dandelion, endive, fennel, jicama, kale, kohlrabi, leek, lettuce, mushroom, mustard greens, napa cabbage, okra, onion, parsnip, pumpkin, radicchio, radish, rhubarb, rutabaga, seaweed (such as dulse, nori, and wakame), shallot, spinach, summer squash, sweet potato, taro, turnip, water chestnuts, watercress, winter squash, yam, yuca, zucchini.
Herbs and Spices: Basil, bay leaf, chamomile, chives, cilantro, cinnamon, cloves, dill, fennel leaf, garlic, ginger, lavender, lemongrass, mace, marjoram, mint, oregano leaf, parsley, rosemary, saffron, sage, savory, sea salt, tarragon, thyme, turmeric, vanilla bean (but not the seeds).
Fruits: Apple, apricot, avocado, banana, blackberry, blueberry, cantaloupe, cherry, clementine, coconut, cranberry, date, fig, grape, grapefruit, guava, honeydew, huckleberry, kiwi, lemon, lime, mango, nectarine, olive, orange, papaya, peach, pear, persimmons, pineapple, plantain, plum, pomegranate, raspberry, strawberry, tangerine, watermelon.
Meat: Beef, bison, chicken, duck, elk, lamb, mutton, pork, rabbit, turkey, venison, yak.
Organ Meat: Bone broth, gizzard, heart, kidney, liver, tongue.
Fish: Anchovies, bass, carp, catfish, cod, haddock, halibut, herring, mackerel, mahi-mahi, monkfish, salmon, sardines, snapper, sole, swordfish, tilapia, trout, tuna.
Shellfish: Clams, crab, crawfish, lobster, mussels, octopus, oysters, prawns, scallops. shrimp, squid.
Ferments: Kombucha, kvass, lacto-fermented fruits and vegetables, sauerkraut, water kefir.
Fats: Avocado oil, bacon fat, coconut oil, duck fat, lard (rendered pork back or kidney fat), olive oil, palm oil, palm shortening, tallow (rendered fat from beef or lamb).
Sweeteners: Coconut sugar, coconut, syrup, dates, dried fruit, honey, maple sugar, maple syrup, molasses.
Foods To Consume In Moderation: AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) treats and baked goods, coconut products, fructose (maximum 20 grams per day), green and black tea, moderate to high glycemic load fruit and vegetables, natural sweeteners, salt ( use mineral rich salt).
Foods To Avoid :
Grains: Amaranth, barley, buckwheat, bulgur, corn, farro, kamut, millet, oats, quinoa, rice, rye, sorghum, spelt, teff, wheat.
Beans and Legumes: Adzuki beans, black beans, black-eyed peas, calico beans, cannellini beans, chickpeas, fava beans, Great Northern beans, lentils, lima beans, navy beans, peanuts, peas, pinto beans, red beans, soybeans (including soy products) split peas, sugar snap peas, white beans.
Nightshades: Ashwagandha, bell peppers, eggplant, goji berries, ground cherries, hot peppers, potatoes, tobacco, tomatillos, tomatoes (also see spices derived from nightshades).
Eggs: Chicken eggs, duck eggs, goose eggs, quail eggs.
Dairy: Butter, Buttermilk, butter oil, cheese, cottage cheese, cream, cream cheese, frozen yogurt, ghee, goat cheese, goat cheese, goat milk, ice cream, kefir, milk, sour cream, whey, whey protein, yogurt.
Nuts and Seeds: Almond, Brazil nut, cashew, chestnut, chia, cocoa, coffee, flax, hazelnut, hemp, macadamia, pecan, pine nut, pistachio, pumpkin seed, sesame seed, sunflower seed ( including flours, butters, and oils derived from nuts and seeds).
Fats: Canola, corn oil, cottonseed oil, palm kernel oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil.
Herbs and Spices: Allspice, aniseed, caraway, cardamon, cayenne pepper, celery seed, chili pepper flakes, chili powder, coriander seed, cumin, curry, dill seed, fennel seed, fenugreek, juniper, mustard seed, nutmeg, paprika, pepper (all kinds), poppy seed, red pepper flakes, sesame seed, star anise, sumac, vanilla seeds.
Other: Alcohol, bee pollen, chlorella, emulsifiers, food additives, food chemicals, maca, NSAID medications (check with your doctor for pain management) processed sugars, processed vegetable oils, spirulina, sugar alcohol and non-nutritive sweeteners (including stevia and xylitol), thickeners.
